11 Coat Closet Ideas for an Upgrade

Is your coat closet small and cluttered? Are you forever picking up coats from the floor and searching through a pile of shoes to find a pair? Turn your messy coat closet into an organized space with the help of these 11 coat closet ideas!

1. Create cubbies with flipped brackets and shelves.

Putting cubbies in your locker can help organize small clothing items, such as mittens and hats. You can DIY your own cubbies by flipping brackets upside down and attaching shelves at the bottom. This is perfect if you already have brackets laying around!

2. Attach plastic file boxes to the wall.

Another way to hold smaller items is to grab a few plastic file boxes and drill them into one of the walls in your coat closet. They are the perfect size to hold shopping bags, both paper and reusable!

3. Use wire baskets to hold cold, wet items.

Mittens, hats, and scarves that get snow on them can become wet. Put them in hanging wire baskets to let them dry out faster.

4. Add narrow and long wire baskets to the door to hold sandals and flats.

If you love to wear sandals and flats, attach narrow wire baskets to the bottom of your coat closet door and store your shoes there. These baskets can hold a lot of sandals and flats and your coat closet floor will be much less cluttered.

5. Install extra shelves above your coat closet’s existing shelf.

Most coat closets have one shelf and a whole lot of wasted vertical space above it. Make good use of the space and add an extra shelf or two.

6. Build a shoe shelf.

Add another shelf in the lower part of your closet to hold your shoes. One shelf or two will give you and your family a place to put their shoes instead of just throwing them on the floor. And you’ll be able to see every pair so you can easily grab what you need.

7. Put a shelving unit in your coat closet.

A simple shelving unit, such as the discontinued Expedit or the Kallax from IKEA, that can fit inside your coat closet would be an organizational powerhouse that can hold baskets filled with shoes, gloves, scarves, purses, hats, and more. Take down your existing rod and get two smaller ones to attach to the shelving unit. This would give your kids a place where they can hang up their own coats themselves.

A note: the Kallax has only four sections, so an Expedit really would work better. Try searching for one through your city’s Craiglist ads.

8. Add hooks to the coat closet door.

Putting hooks on the inside of your coat closet door will give you a place to hang up your purses, hats, and scarves. This would be a great solution if you like to switch between purses and bags. Use Command hooks if you have a hollow door.

9. Divide your coat closet into zones.

If you have a smaller home, dividing your coat closet into zones with MDF panels would help you gain space for other things besides coats and shoes, such as a basket filled with balls and sporting equipment and a mail center.

10. Turn your coat closet into a mini mudroom.

Have you always dreamed of having a mudroom instead of a coat closet? You can turn your coat closet into a mini mudroom by removing the rod and shelf and adding hooks on the wall. Add shoe shelves to the bottom. No more coat hangers that tangle up!

If you’re up for some demo, you could widen the opening to your coat closet and add beefy trim along the top and sides. Put in a bench to complete the transformation!

Here’s another beautiful example of a coat closet-turned-mudroom. Note the drawers below the bench for even more storage space.

11. Add a secret room behind the coat closet!

This one is completely just for fun! If you have extra space at the back of your coat closet, add a tiny door to lead to a secret room for your kids to hide away and read books and play in their pretend world.

It’s that time of year again where the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT) slips on its travel agent hat and heads out to negotiate some epic staycation deals for the people of Abu Dhabi. And so the cycle begins

The very first Hudayriyat Cycling Challenge takes place this weekend, giving cyclists the opportunity to spin their pedals in search of medals in 100km and 30km races. The 100 kilometre race starts at 6am and will be contested over 10 loops of the 10 click track, with the prize purse of Dhs300,000 being allocated among winners of each age and gender division. The 30km race is just for fun, with no monetary prizes up for grabs, just big bike bragging rights. Registration is now open to everyone aged 12 and over. The cost for entry into the 100km race is Dhs120, the 30km race fee is Dhs90. The window for sign up is due to close on April 1. Male and female cyclists will compete in separate races.

Chef Reif Othman launches new Japanese concept in Dubai Marina – Things To Do in Dubai

“Where purpose meets passion”…

If there’s one chef who knows what he’s doing when it comes to Japanese cuisine, it’s Reif Othman. The acclaimed culinary master has a number of restaurants under his helm already, and now he’s been brought on to consult the menu for another.

Ikigai, found in Millennium Place Dubai Marina, has just opened its doors, bringing the flavours of Far East Asia to Dubai. The laid-back restaurant and bar concept aims to fuse high quality Japanese street food at lunch and dinner, with an extensive cocktail menu for those chilled after-work vibes.

It’s an izikaya (Japanese pub tavern) so don’t expect any fine-dining frills or white tablecloths as this easy-going eatery. Whether you’re catching up with friends on a Thursday night, or looking for a place to while away a Saturday afternoon, this is one to check out.

The name Ikigai means ‘reason for being’, which is fitting for a place that focuses on an upbeat atmosphere and good food. Inside the space, you’ll find wooden interiors, moody lighting and graffiti murals, inspired by Japanese urban chic streets.

On the menu, guests can expect a varied selection from grilled tiger prawns with Kombu butter to crispy tempura burgers. The mix-and-match sharing plates are designed to be ideal for celebrations and sharing.

“An izikaya concept in this part of Dubai is unique. It’s casual, really fun, and we cater for diners who love Japanese food and flavours. We take the quality of our food seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously,” said Mark Patten, Vice President of Food & Beverage, The First Group, who partnered with Reif on the new concept.

There’s a mix of high and low seating, as well as cosy booths to watch all the action of the venue from the sides. A panoramic bar takes up the centre of the space, while an outdoor space lends itself to alfresco dining in the cooler months.

The culture scene has come alive in Dubai with several large scale art and cultural events such as Art Dubai 2021 and Rethink the Regular at Dubai Design District. And now, culture vultures have another event to add to their dairy: World Art Dubai.

The region’s most accessible and affordable retail art fair is returning to Dubai from Wednesday, April 7 to Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Hall 1 and 2 at Dubai World Trade Centre. It will run under the theme ‘‘Discovering new Perspectives’.

At the event, you will find more than 200 local and international artists plus galleries displaying their works across more than 2,000 pieces across a range of disciplines.

And you will be able to visit for a cost of just Dhs20 per adult and Dhs10 per child. There are also family packages available so make sure you check out that option when you purchase your ticket.

Art for every wall

If the walls of your home need some decking up, World Art Dubai is the place to be with original and diverse art pieces available to purchase with prices starting from Dhs3,000.

Be it a bag, shoes or an item of clothing – it’s a pitstop you have to make if you want a quick outfit makeover or style advice. And it’s free of charge.

You can even get your photo painted by a robot, check out a catwalk show featuring wearable art, scope out a sustainable art exhibition and much more.
