Ministry Of Economy & The Licensing Authorities Begin Issuance Of Written Warnings To Establishments Violating UBO Procedures – Things To Do in Dubai

Imposition of fines to begin in July

The Ministry of Economy (MoE) in cooperation with the concerned licensing authorities in the country, announced that it has begun implementing the first phase of administrative penalties on establishments that do not comply with ultimate beneficiary owner procedures.

In the first phase, written warnings are being issued to establishments that violate Cabinet Resolution No. (58) of 2020 on the Regulation of Ultimate Beneficial Owner Procedures, starting from July 1, 2021.

The Ministry added that the implementation of the 2nd phase of administrative penalties on establishments that fail to adopt the necessary measures to correct their status during this period will start on July 8, 2021. In this phase, fines stipulated by Cabinet Resolution No.53 of 2021 will be imposed on non-compliant establishments.

Furthermore, the Ministry stated that nearly 85 per cent of the establishments responded to the legal requirements and ensured their compliance with the relevant decisions and legislation by fulfilling the requirements of the ultimate beneficial owner procedures. These establishments have provided required data to the licensing authorities to which they administer, while the remaining 15 per cent failed to register during the registration period and provide the required data to the authorities.

In addition, the Ministry confirmed that the submission of ultimate beneficial owner data by licensed and registered establishments in the country to the licensing authorities is an obligatory legal requirement and that non-compliance in this regard will lead to the imposition of administrative penalties stipulated in Cabinet Resolution No. (53) of 2021. The penalties begin with the issuance of a written warning and if the non-compliance by an establishment continues, including but not limited to, a fine of AED 100,000, as well as additional administrative penalties such as the suspension of the license for a year or restrictions on the powers of the board of directors. Establishments can appeal against the punitive measures within the specified legal period of 30 days from the date of notification of the violation, in accordance with the decision.

The Ministry further explained that the detection of violations will be carried out through a desk inspection, which is the examination of an establishment’s records with the licensing authority to ascertain the extent of its commitment to providing the required ultimate beneficial owner data. If a violation is found during this examination, administrative penalties will be imposed, starting with the issuance of a written warning in the first stage. Apart from that, field inspections will also be conducted to detect violations, during which, visits will be conducted to the  offices of the establishments within the framework of the inspection campaigns of the relevant authorities.

The Ministry of Economy called upon the establishments that have not yet adopted the required  ultimate beneficial owner procedures to immediately  prepare ultimate beneficial owner data and maintain it within their records in order to avoid violations. It called for the establishments’ cooperation with the relevant government entities in supporting the strengthening of   the  anti-money laundering systems, combating the financing of terrorism and the financing of illegal organizations, and strengthening the overall systems of governance, disclosure and transparency in the business environment. These measures enhance confidence in the national economy and supports the country’s efforts in providing a safe and stable environment for businesses and investments.

The ultimate beneficial owner procedures at least include 1) creating a record of the ultimate beneficial owner data and maintaining it within the establishment, 2) verifying the accuracy and validity of the data and updating it on an ongoing basis, 3) submitting the real beneficiary owner data to the licensing authorities through the designated channels.

The Ministry indicated that in the event of any changes to the ultimate beneficial owner data of an establishment, the establishment is required to notify the relevant licensing authority within 15 days of the change in order to avoid the administrative penalties resulting from that. The establishments shall also appoint a person residing in the country with whom the licensing authority can communicate with, in relation to the establishment’s basic information, ultimate beneficial owner data and other information.

A New Look at Getting Older – Things To Do in Dubai

*Article by Dr. Saliha Afridi, Clinical Psychologist and Managing Director of The LightHouse Arabia:

When I was younger- 40 seemed like the end of the line. I imagined it would be a time when I could ‘hit the cruise control button’ and live out the remainder of my years. This was at a time when birthdays were the best day of the year. From the themed birthday cake to the party and the array of presents, I thought birthdays couldn’t get better than they were in the first decade of my life. Why? Because when I was young I was literally living in the moment and every day was an adventure.

Fast forward to my teenage years and birthdays started feeling a bit different. It wasn’t  so much about that special day anymore, it was about the number and what it allowed me to do. Each year added time to my curfew, driving privileges, the right to vote, and a lot more freedom. Then came my 20s. I felt an urgency to get everything done. I worked through the checklist handed down to me from my culture and society of all the things a person should do. I checked off finishing college, getting the ‘right’ career, earning good money and getting engaged. By the time I was in my 30s the goals were to work further down the checklist: be in good health, get the right job, meet the right man, have the right number of children,  live in the right house and establish the right relationships. I imagined that by the time I was 40 I would have checked everything off and I could relax and live the rest of my years out in the castles I built in the earlier decades.

I am now in my 40s and, I have to say, everything I thought as a child and young adult about how my 40s would be is not so. It is not ‘downhill from here’, how could it be? I feel like I just got the hang of life. I must admit that a part of me is dreading the appearing wrinkles and the greying hair; but the bigger part of me is actually looking forward with excitement and anticipation. I am pleased to be in the mystical and magical 40s.

Another realization as I entered my 40s is that my soul doesn’t sit silent and dormant anymore. It appears as a voice that has always been there, but was quietened by the “checklist” of life. Now the voice is loud and clear. I have started to hear it in the most random of places. It might be at a coffee morning where it starts to speak and tell me to get up and go live out my life’s purpose. I hear it  during a long work day, when it reminds me that what really matters to me is my family and I haven’t given any time or effort to those relationships recently. Questions such as  ‘whose life have I been living? Whose values have directed my decisions?” are part of my days, in waiting rooms as I wait for my appointments or in grocery stores in the cereal aisle. This voice is forcing me to take a good, hard look at my life and my decisions. Every decision is being stress tested to see if it is consistent with who I am and with the life I want to live. It’s a scary process to have to assess all the decisions I have made up to this point, but it is also a beautiful process. I know this voice will guide me, and engaging with it is the only way home to my true self.

So as I entered my 40s, I made a commitment to set aside time to quieten my mind and really listen to myself. I am prepared to ask myself the tough questions. And I am also prepared to summon the courage to make the difficult decisions and to start life all over again.

I guess if I could go back and speak to my younger self,  I would tell her that 40 isn’t the end of any line and it is no time to be hitting the cruise control. 40 is actually where the line begins and creation beckons. I think Carl Jung was right when he said life begins at 35 and that the most magical years of our lives are between 35 and 70.  I look forward to aging. Actually, I can’t wait.

15 celebrities with different names than we know them as – Emirates Woman – Things To Do in Dubai

While celebrities are known by millions the globe over, what you may not know is some A-listers don’t go by the names they were given at birth.

From supermodel Gigi Hadid to superstar singer Rihanna, find out these stars’ real names and the story behind why they changed them.

Gigi Hadid – Jelena Noura Hadid

Gigi Hadid fashion show pregnant

While we all know the supermodel as Gigi, she was born Jelena which is pronounced Yelena, but as a nickname was called Gigi by family.

However, when she started school Jelena became difficult to pronounce so she began going by ‘Gigi’ full-time. “In first or second grade, there was a girl named Helena and it got confusing with the teacher who had to call out our names, and so the teacher asked my mom, ‘If I needed to call Jelena a nickname, what would it be?’ And my mom was like, ‘I call her Gigi sometimes,’ and the name stuck,” Gigi told Vogue in a 2015 interview.

As for her middle name Noura, which is her Arabic name as her father, Mohamed Hadid, told Turkey-based newspaper the Daily Sabah earlier this year.

Marilyn Monroe – Norma Jeane Mortenson

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe is one of the icons of old Hollywood. When she began her career in tinsel town in 1946, she opted for the stage name we all know and love her as. Her first name was picked by Ben Lyon, a 20th Century-Fox executive, as she reportedly reminded him of Marilyn Miller. To match the first name, she took Monroe which was her mother’s maiden name.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex – Rachel Meghan Markle

While she’s now known as Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex after marrying Prince Harry in 2018. Prior to this, the former Suits star was known as Meghan Markle in the acting world. However, she was actually born Rachel Meghan Markle and opted to go by her middle name when she started acting.

Rihanna – Robyn Rihanna Fenty

rihanna

The Grammy Award winner has always gone by her middle name Rihanna, but some of her family still call her by her birth name.  “I get kind of numb to hearing Rihanna, Rihanna, Rihanna,” she told Rolling Stone in 2011. “When I hear Robyn, I pay attention.”

However, what surprised many fans in 2017 when she launched her beauty brand Fenty Beauty, many were unaware of the brand was named after her last name Fenty.

Miley Cyrus – Destiny Hope Cyrus

As a child, the actress and singer was frequently called Miley (originated from Smiley) which she later adopted as her stage name.

Shay Mitchell – Shannon Ashley Garcia Mitchell

The actress got her stage name as she is a big fan of J.Lo, her friends would call her ‘Shay Lo’ which reverted to Shay when her acting career took off.

George Michael – Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou

As the son of a Cypriot immigrant, the late singer decided to make his name more British. His surname Michael derived from a childhood friends’ father, Michael Mortimer.

Travis Scott – Jacques Berman Webster II

The rapper’s stage moniker is very different from his birth name, Jacques Berman Webster II. His first and last names are an ode to his uncle.

Nina Dobrev – Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva

Born in Bulgaria, Nina Dobrev relocated to Canada with her family when she was a toddler. Like many, she opted to shorten her name for ease when she started acting.

Snoop Dogg – Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr.

Due to his style, the young Calvin Cordozar Broadus was nicknamed “Snoopy” by his mother. The latter of his recognizable name, Dogg, comes from his love of a famous cartoon character.

Brad Pitt – William Bradley Pitt

Brad Pitt Coming To The UAE

Quite simply, the actor uses his middle name as his pseudonym.

Mila Kunis – Milena Markovna Kunis

Mila-Kunis-Gemfields

The actress shortened her name when she moved from Ukraine to the USA.

The Weeknd – Abel Makkonen Tesfaye

It’s probably fairly obvious that The Weeknd’s name isn’t his real moniker. Born as Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, the rapper left home at the age of 17. He opted for the stage name The Weeknd when he and a friend “left one weekend and never came home”. He had to remove the ‘e’ in weekend as there was a band already name ‘The Weekend’ at the time.

Lady Gaga – Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta

lady gaga oscars 2019 tiffany necklace audrey hepburn

As you’d guess, Lady Gaga isn’t the singer’s real name. Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, she opted for the stage name ‘Lady Gaga’ when she began her career which was inspired by Queen’s hit song Radio Ga Ga.

Reese Witherspoon  – Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon

reese witherspoon

Born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon, the name ‘Reese’ is actually the actress’ mother’s maiden name, which she opted to use as her first name when her acting career began.

You can now DNA test your skin with this Dubai-based treatment – Emirates Woman – Things To Do in Dubai

Dubai-based holistic beauty expert Julie Lemke discusses the benefits of DNA testing when it comes to achieving optimal skin results.

What are the benefits of DNA testing when it comes to skincare?

With the Skin DNA test, I am able to forecast the skin challenges you may find ahead – before they occur. The test will also tell you how your skin is going to age making you capable of managing certain lifestyle choices, before the signs will show up on your skin. It is much easier to prevent than to treat. The key to healthy resilient skin is prevention – and long term the preventative philosophy will also save you a lot of money.

The Skin DNA Test is looking for various health markers such as, your body’s ability to metabolize sugar, how fast your collagen is breaking down, the inflammation response, the oxidation process, skin sensitivity and much more. Your DNA will never change- so once you have done the test you will never need to redo it.

We all have a genetic switch- meaning we are able to turn our genes on -or off. Even though you may be predisposed for a certain condition, you will be able to avoid this by making certain lifestyle choices. By looking at your skin visually, you are able to address certain concerns. However, this test goes below the surface and tells you what is going on – on a deeper level.

The Skin DNA technology is able to access the needs of our skin with high-end scientific precision. With our wider lifespan nowadays, it is so important to take care of the skin which is going to carry you throughout your life. It is your coating; your protection and you want to take the best possible care of it.

How can you refine your skincare regimen based on these results and does this enable you to forward plan this regime for the future?

Having your Skin DNA tested will enable me to know your strengths and weaknesses in your skin and enable me to create and recommend a specifically targeted regimen for you. This will be based on your genetic blueprint, containing key skincare ingredients-, supplements and suggested additional services to support what is the best match for your skin’s unique DNA composition. We are essentially simplifying your skincare regimen, by taking out the guesswork when buying skincare products which enables you to focus more on the areas where you skin may be genetically weaker.

When should you be testing this and what is the process?

You can have the Skin DNA test done at any age. Obliviously the sooner – the better, but literally anyone who would like to known their genetic breakdown and be able to future plan for the health of their skin – is a candidate. The procedure is completely pain-free and effortless. You will be asked to refrain from eating and drinking 1-hour prior to your Skin DNA test. The DNA sample will be collected from a salvia swap from your inner cheek. The sample will be sent to the Skin DNA’s laboratory in Australia for further processing.

Your report should be available in 7 to 10 days after testing. Once the test arrives, I will go through the results together with you and based on the outcome we are able to create a plan specifically targeted for your individual needs. You will have a detailed printed report with your own skin’s unique genetic profile that is yours to keep.

Do you see similar results for clients living within the UAE?

The Skin DNA test is elevating skincare and skin health in my opinion. I have not seen anything similar on the market that can be compared to this testing method. If you commit and follow the instructions given in your DNA test – you will be able to transform your skin or prevent your genes in being expressed.

Skincare is such an interesting topic in the UAE. We have so many different cultures and ethnicities. Generally, for all of us in the UAE, we live in a hot climate with a lot of sun exposure and humidity but in addition, we are exposed to the dry air from the Air conditioning which has an exceptionally negative effect on certain skin types and conditions. However, we are able to repair and prevent so much with the correct skincare, nutrition and treatments.

For many of us, fine lines creep in without us noticing. What is the best way to combat this naturally?

Fine lines can, amongst other things, be linked to surface dehydration, a result of a decrease in collagen production or a combination of both. I would recommend to have your skin checked by a professional, so you can target your specific issue in the right way.

The key ways to combat this are; wear photo protection daily – a minimum of SPF 30 is recommended. Protect yourself from environmental aggressors by applying a topical vitamin C serum, which adds in an extra layer of protection combating free radical damage and preserving the fibroblast cells which are the cells responsible for collagen production. Eat a balanced diet and reduce your stress levels. When we are stressed, we release an elevated level of cortisol. Cortisol will break down your tissue and is therefore one of the worst enemies of collagen, and finally I would recommend facial massage. Facial massages stimulate and promote collagen production, oxygenates the tissues and brings fresh nutrients to the surface. Regular facial massage can tremendously help reduce the appearance of any fine lines and assist in boosting your collagen production.

What in the beauty market is luxury?

Working as a Holistic Esthetician, the first thing that came to my mind would be treatment-related: “Bespoke and Customize”. All skincare lines have certain protocols, but to be able to really look at the need of the individual and tailor a treatment for them is the ultimate goal. Also, I feel that being cared for, pampered and nourished on a deeper level is the ultimate luxury. I think it should just be normal practice, but I feel like we live in a world where everything has become so rushed and hectic. It is super important for me that my clients feel secure, heard and cared for when they are in my hands.

What does your pre-bedtime beauty routine look like?

It all depends on what kind of mood I am in, how tired I am and how much time I’ve got. Sometimes I can do a super quick routine – which consist of iS Clinical Cleansing Complex, iS Clinical Hydra-Cool Serum, Eye Doctor from CosMedix and my Retinol from PCA skin. At other times I can really allow myself to do a nice peel, hydrating mask, Gua Sha, facial reflexology and boost my skin with LED light with my Déesse Pro Mask.
But one thing is for sure, I will never ever go to bed without having cleansed my face and décolletage. I cannot stress this enough. Our skin and body go into repair mode at night and you do not want to bring your “day” into your clean sheets.

The inspiring story behind this new Huda Kattan backed wellness brand – Emirates Woman – Things To Do in Dubai

Having cultivated an incredible brand from the ground up over the past decade, Huda Kattan is now helping budding entrepreneurs to do the same through her new concept HB Angels.

Huda announced the $10 million fund back in 2017 via HB Investments, to help creatives and entrepreneurs to make their budding ideas come to fruition.

The first start-up to launch out of this concept is KETISH, founded by Emaan Abbass, who previously worked as a product developer at Huda Beauty. The brand is specialising in women’s wellness, something that was inspired by Emaan’s battle with cervical cancer.

Having first been diagnosed at just 21-years-old at her first gynaecologist appointment, it was a complete shock to the then university student.

“I was a senior in college at the time and was just trying to figure out what I was going to do next with my adult life—and in that moment I remember feeling like my whole world had been turned upside down,” she recalled.

For the next nine years, Emaan had to be closely monitored, going for scans every three to six months and each time swab results would “come back abnormal”.

“Luckily the cancer was detected early on and I was able to treat it by removing the cancer cells on my cervix through Cervical Cryosurgery,” she explained. “I had to undergo this procedure twice, at the age of 21 and again at the age of 24. It wasn’t until I was 30 years old that I went for my first screening that came back normal.”

This is what inspired Emaan to create KETISH. Finding it incredibly difficult to find any information or products to help with women’s wellness, which is where the budding idea emerged to create a space that would do exactly that.

The brand has been in the works now for two years and is set to officially launch in August. In the Q&A below, Emaan reveals more about the inspiring story behind the brand and what it’s been like building KETISH with HB Investments.

Your brand is so strong and inspiring. What led to this message?

I have always had a very clear vision of what I wanted KETISH to stand for.
I wanted to create the brand that I wish I had years ago when I really started to tune into my feminine wellness journey. Bold, empowering, thoughtful, supportive. I always wanted to create products, but it was the community and the potential to reshape the dialogue that really drove me to the brand’s mission.

There are so many societal factors that silence us as women, often putting us into a little box. We are told what to do, how to dress, how to behave, what is acceptable, what is not, what we can and cannot do with our bodies. Growing up in a traditional Muslim, Arab-American home, I battled these notions a lot. I often questioned why these rules and regulations of life existed. I wanted to create something that worked to break down these barriers, not just for the sake of being rebellious, but rather with the purpose of helping women.

Our goal is to replace shame and stigma with sensuality and self-love by creating a luxury experience around feminine wellness. Bigger than that we want to empower women, by providing education and a whole army of other women she can lean on for support.

Why did you create KETISH?

Throughout my 20’s, dealing with all of my feminine health issues made me really curious about the entire feminine and intimate care space. I vividly remember scouring the pharmacies and drug stores, because that’s the only place you could find anything intimate care related. This is something that really bothered me about feminine care space at that time. We usually go to a pharmacy when something is wrong with us, or when we want to fix an issue. I didn’t want to feel like buying feminine care was like taking care of a problem. I wanted more than a treatment and temporary fix. I wanted a more elevated experience that felt like I was buying products to pamper myself and build into my self care routine. I wanted products that looked vanity or bedside table worthy. I wanted products I could trust. I wanted a brand I could turn to, to educate me. Ultimately I no longer wanted to feel embarrassed or feel like I was walking this journey alone and ashamed.

KETISH has been in the works for a little over two years now, but it feels like it has been a lifetime in the works for me- from my feminine health journey, to navigating my way through a traditionally strict and oppressive culture. Ultimately, I wanted to create the brand I wish I had throughout my journey. I wanted to create something that women like me always needed, but never truly existed.

Could you tell us a little bit about your experience building the brand with HB Investments and the Kattan family?

As a former employee for HB, I’ve had the honor of working alongside the Kattan family since 2016, this experience of first hand watching how Hudabeauty has grown into the beauty giant it now is has been invaluable. You will definitely see pieces of the HB DNA woven throughout KETISH’s foundation- whether it be the way we develop products, to our storytelling and content, to the way we strive to care for and develop our teams. These are all things I had the opportunity to learn first hand from Huda and the rest of the family.

Throughout this experience of building the brand our relationship has definitely transformed. To go from former employee to now business partner and mentee, the Kattan family have given me invaluable advice based on their experiences, to do with anything from business to marketing. They’ve taught me the value of hard work, perseverance and pure passion. So grateful for the support and time they’ve taken to instill all of this in me.

As one of the incubator brands for the firm, HBI has provided an incredible foundation for the brand. KETISH has been given the opportunity to lean on and leverage the amazing resources they have built into the HBI ecosystem. The HBI team is built of key integral roles that help support the pillars a brand may need to survive in their beginning phase, but may not have the resources to fund their own- from finance, to operations, to marketing, to HR. To know we can build something that is true and unique to our brand, while having the support of an organization filling in the gaps of where we need the most support, while we build out our legs underneath us.

How would you describe KETISH in your own words?

In five words: Bold, empowering, sexy, supportive, necessary. KETISH is ultimately a feminine wellness brand. We create targeted body care and wellness products that are super effective, empowering, luxurious, and have that undeniable dope factor. Visually, KETISH is the perfect intersection between soft and sexy, bold and powerful.

What impact do you want to have on other women through KETISH?

Everything we aim to do as a brand is really driven forward by our brand’s mission. We want to replace shame and stigma with sensuality and self-love by creating a luxury experience around feminine wellness. It’s 2021, but so many women still carry around the same old shame and stigma. Although we are years deep into the body positivity movement, there are still women who aren’t quite there yet. But, they want to be.

What is the change you want to see in the world by introducing KETISH?

We want to open up the dialogue and normalize the conversation. We want to equip women with super effective, luxurious products that help them explore and get to know their bodies on a more intimate level. We want to give women a voice and allow them the opportunity to make educated decisions about their health and their bodies. We believe with knowledge comes confidence, and with confidence comes the highest form of self-love.

Being a founder can be tough. What is it that keeps getting you out of bed every day? What motivates you to keep going?

The last two years have been a beautifully gruelling journey. Trying to launch a brand at a time the entire world was at a standstill and with so much uncertainty all around, was a whole other mountain to climb. There have been a lot of sleepless nights, a lot of tears, a lot of “WTF am i doing moments…” BUT… There is so much we want to do in this space. I have realized that KETISH is much bigger than the products we are creating. We have an opportunity to help so many women, to give them a voice, to educate, to put the power back in their hands, and that is what gets me out of bed each and every morning. We’ve been given this gift of launching under the umbrella of a global powerhouse, Huda Beauty, that gives us an incredible platform with a huge global reach. I pinch myself everyday knowing the opportunity we have to speak to so many women all over the world and make a true impact.

The NCEMA declares the UAE is seeing a decrease in COVID-19 numbers – Emirates Woman – Things To Do in Dubai

Sixteen months after the COVID-19 pandemic was first declared, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) has declared numbers in the UAE are now decreasing.

This, in turn, is leading to a return to “normal life” pre-coronavirus.

In a statement issued on the NCEMA’s official Twitter page, the authority declared the country is “adapting with the virus”.

“The decrease in the number of cases reflects a gradual return to a new normal life, with a wider return of economic & tourism activity, & return of employees to their work, which aligns with the concept of adapting with the virus, which would enable humanity to achieve recovery,” the NCEMA stated.

As the country with the highest percentage of vaccinations in the world, the UAE has made it a priority for life to return to normal as quickly as possible, whilst learning to live with the virus.

To date, over 78.2 per cent of the population have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 68.6 per cent have received their second dose.

Currently, there are five COVID-19 vaccines available in the UAE.

The first vaccine to be approved in the UAE was the Sinophram vaccine, followed by the Pfizer vaccine.

In January of this year, Russia’s Sputnik V was approved for emergency use. The Oxford-AstraZeneca is also approved for use. Most recently, the Moderna vaccine was approved to be administered in Dubai.

These Dubai content creators have proven this new bag is a must-have – Emirates Woman – Things To Do in Dubai

A new It bag has been making the rounds on Instagram and some of our favourite Dubai-based content creators have firmly put it on our must-have list.

Loewe has added a brand new design to its line-up of signature bags, designed by the fashion house’s creative Jonathan Anderson.

Debuting as part of the Loewe Fall/Winter 2021 collection, the Goya offers a different look to the Maison’s usual bag designs.

Veering away from the fashion brand’s more eclectic designs, like the asymmetry of the ever-popular Puzzle bag, the shell-like design of the Paula or the brand’s classic Balloon bag, the Goya bag offers a new compact, structured design.

While it’s a more simple design, just like with every Loewe design it makes a statement.

Available in a wide range of colours, the bag is beautifully hand-crafted in silk calfskin and features the Loewe anagram in gold at the closure of the bag.

Some of our favourite Dubai-based content creators have been showing us exactly how to style this new bag and it’s safe to say it’s firmly on our wish list.

Shop Neely & Chloe Exclusively at Kathy Kuo Home Southampton | Kathy Kuo Blog – Home Lighting Ideas

Bonjour, cuties! I’m feeling very French after just getting home from a wonderful vacation in France with my children! Though it was oh-so-sad to say au revoir to the chic streets of Paris, Brittany, and Honfleur (be on the lookout for a travel recap post shortly), I’m thrilled to be back on the East end because we have some can’t-miss in-store events and happenings coming up at Kathy Kuo Home Southampton. First up? I have news to share about one of my favorite handbag brands, Neely & Chloe!

Launched by sisters Neely Burch and Chloe Burch (and yes, that’s “Burch” as in their aunt Tory) in 2016, Neely & Chloe is an effortlessly chic line of handbags and accessories with quality and craftsmanship at its core. All the premium leathers used in their products are from in Spain and Portugal, and every silhouette is truly timeless. Starting this summer, KKH Southampton will become the exclusive Hamptons retailer of Neely & Chloe’s new collection, a very special collaboration with Ariel Okin (one of my fave interior designers in the game!) and we’re thrilled to be hosting a Q&A panel with Neely and Chloe in-store (30 Jobs Lane) on August 10, 2021, from 4:30-6pm.

The panel will touch on how the sisters built their business, the joys and challenges of being female founders, how they design their bags, and the launch of their newest collection…and of course we’ll be hosting a cocktail hour as well (#RoséAllDay).

Anyone who knows me knows that after interior design and home furnishings, two of my biggest passions are fashion and supporting fellow female entrepreneurs, so this partnership is a match made in handbag heaven. To give you more insight into the Neely & Chloe brand and to give you a sneak peek at what you can expect to see in-store this summer, my team and I caught up with the style-savvy sisters. Read on to learn more!

For any of our readers who aren’t yet familiar with the brand, could you tell me a bit about how Neely & Chloe came to be–what are some of the touch-points that brought the company to where it is today?

Neely: For those who don’t know, we’re sisters! And now, business partners. In our house, we always (I mean always) talked a lot about fashion and about entrepreneurship. Ideas and building things with your own two hands were not only welcome, but (usually to our teenage dismay!) required. I began my career in the art world while Chloe was a merchant J.Crew. in 2014, I broke out on my own and after a little convincing, Chloe jumped ship in the fall of 2015. We began work on Neely & Chloe and launched one year later.

The brand really emerged from personal experiences…  we were 22 and 23, trying to make it work in New York City in creative fields… Why couldn’t we find beautiful bags we could afford! We wanted to create something that felt aspirational, yet attainable. We wanted to build a product at a price point that felt accessible, that could be folded into your lifestyle more than once in a blue moon. We knew it was important to create a story and, in turn, a brand that our customers could connect with. In September of 2016, we launched Neely & Chloe on our core pillars of quality, timeless style, and transparency, which are still an integral part of our brand today.

What’s it like being co-founders together and also sisters? What do you each individually bring to the business?

Chloe: For us it’s hard to imagine having it any other way. Not only do we know each other incredibly well, but our life long relationship leaves little room for concern about overstepping or feather ruffling. We’re able to lay all our ideas, thoughts and opinions on the table without a second thought.

Another key reason our partnership has been so seamless is our complementary strengths and weaknesses. Neely and I are sisters and friends, but we’re also very different in terms of our core personalities and how those translate into our skill sets as business owners. I’m definitely more detail-oriented and make sure we’re staying on track. I manage our wholesale business, production and development and most things that require constant communication.

Neely is much better at thinking of the bigger picture– where we’re going to be in one, two or five years. She’s good at handling the broader scope of the business and what we should be focusing on down the line. The combination of the two is really important and something that, luckily, came very naturally for the both of us.

Neely: At one point we were sisters, co-founders, and roommates! Our relationship style is very off the cuff,  leave it all on the table. When something bothers us, we can talk all about it, and there might be a spat, but then we’ll move on and say: “I love you, you love me, but we’ve got a meeting to go to, so let’s put this behind us.” That’s really helped us–being completely transparent with one another, there’s never anything brewing under the surface.

The brand is full of very classic silhouettes, but there’s also a lot of whimsy with the customization options and the hand-paining. What was your process like in deciding how your core assortment of designs would look?

Chloe: It took some time! When we launched we started with 12 silhouettes of handbags and accessories and there are a few key pieces from that very first season that are still with us today: The Small Tote, the Mini Lady Bag, and the Cosmetic Case. We’re proud of those early stars because they remind us that those core N&C ideals still ring true nearly five years later. But don’t let us fool you–there were definitely some dogs! It was a learning process.

Today, we have around 10 silhouettes that are best-sellers, known as our “core” product offering. Historically, we have interspersed this with seasonal newness developed internally. But in 2021, we decided to mix things up! This past March, we launched our first collaborative print with  Julia Berolzheimer. It was a dream to work in collaboration with another female creative. I think we were all blown away by the success of the partnership. We have just launched our second with the very stylish Ariel Okin! Now if only we could convince her to whip our houses into shape!

Neely: We’ve worked very hard over our first five years to perfect these core, best-selling silhouettes but we’ve alway been a little scared of pattern work. There are so many talented women out there who it comes to so naturally… why not work together to create an even more alluring product full of newness and novelty? To partner with other women like Ariel or Julia, who integrate pattern and color into their lives so effortlessly, has been such fun. To see our product serving as a jumping off point, or the blank canvas feels like so much is coming full circle…it’s like a large-scale iteration of the customization that has become so synonymous with N&C.

We had hoped for women to be able to put their very own personal touch on our product so when you unwrapped that box, you really felt like it was crafted just for you. For us, fashion is all about core basics with a touch of flare–as our oh so chic mama taught us. You take these building blocks that are beautiful and timeless and can be used over and over and iterated on in so many different ways, then you find a way to put a twist on it–whether that’s adding an accessory to a crisp white button down and jeans (as our Mom taught us to do) or adding personalization onto your Neely & Chloe bag.

Tell us about your partnership with Ariel Okin. What should shoppers know about this new collaboration?

Neely: Ariel is an incredibly talented interior designer, whom we’ve gotten to know through the New York entrepreneurship gang. Also, a fellow Philadelphian, another fun connection. She has done some amazing interior design projects– so worth browsing if you’re not familiar! We’ve been such a fan of Ariel’s work for a long time, so when conversations started developing, it felt like a very organic and like-minded partnership.

We worked in partnership with Ariel and Larsen McDowell, another talent!, to develop three prints in really fun, beautiful colors for the summer that will really translate seamlessly into the fall. They’re whimsical and full of life, but also very thoughtful and functional. We recreated the outside of our canvas products in a coated material so that they’re more durable and you can beat them up and all those pesky stains will roll right off! We really wanted to create a collection together that channeled Ariel’s interior sensibility in a way that felt approachable and fun for everyone!

We are so excited to be the exclusive Hamptons retailer of Neely & Chloe’s new collection at our Southampton store. At KKH we love working with female-founded brands, especially others in creative fields, so working with you and your brand made perfect sense. On your end, what made KKH a good fit for you as a retail partner?

Chloe: First and foremost, we love working with female-founded brands. Any beyond that, after working with Ariel and dipping our toe into the interiors world, this felt like such a natural extension! The aesthetic and level of subtle, approachable sophistication that Kathy Kuo Home brings to the table in the interior design world made it feel like the perfect home base for Ariel Okin x Neely & Chloe. This is our first foray into the interior space but we’re already feeling the positive energy from our consumers, it’s already starting to feel like home.

Neely: And on that note…this has been a very unique year and a half for all of us. It has so many thinking, “Wow, my house has to serve as such a bigger force in my life than it has previously.” Our core customers–women in their mid to late 20s to their late 40s– are diving head first into the world of home interiors. It’s something we feel organically in our own lives… I’m moving into my first house, Chloe’s got her first grown up apartment in the city with her husband (Ikea furniture no more!). The more we share this part of our lives with our customers, the more they want to know. So, partnering with an interior designer and working with Kathy Kuo Home–a home brand that serves as such a guiding light for so many women–just all feels very fitting.

Chloe and I have been trying to be better at sharing a little bit from a tastemaker perspective and we get so much engagement and enthusiasm when we’re willing to share that part of our lives with our followers. So, partnering with an interior designer and working with Kathy Kuo Home–an amazing home brand that serves as such a guiding light for so many women–just all feels very organic.

We’re thrilled to be hosting a Q&A event with you in-store on August 10. Any sneak peek info you could share about what attendees can expect from the panel discussion?

Chloe: We’re really excited about the event! I think it’s so special to have us as founders and then Kathy there to talk through everything from starting a business and running a business to what the future has in store! I know Kathy Kuo Home will have products in-store, and we’ll be bringing some additional product. I’ve heard there will be a little vino too– what else do we need for a good time!

Neely: It will be one of our very first events in the past year and a half! And boy are we ready! As always, we’re excited to give people the opportunity to touch and feel our products, and to particularly get a first look at this new line with Ariel Okin. There’s always so much fun to be had when you throw a few creative women together and chat! We cant wait!
