Do you love natural materials? Bohemian furniture? Bright colors and patterns? A washed-out, laid-back look? The artistic and self-expressive style of bohemian interiors is one of our favorites here at Kathy Kuo Home. Unlike more refined styles (which we love as well), the bohemian look embraces all and uses its patterns, textiles, fabrics, and accessories to express its lifestyle and its values.
It’s a look filled with love and laughter. Mix this colorful and effortless aesthetic with cool, coastal vibes, and the result is our Boho Beach lookbook. Today, we’re exploring the origins of this beloved style and giving you the five easy tips you’ll need to get the look.

Boho Beach Tip #1. Know Your Roots
To pull off beachy bohemian furniture, you have to know the origins of the look. Boho beach is an adaptation of boho chic, a fashion style made popular by Kate Moss in the early 90s and rooted in the colorful and carefree nature of 1960s flower children.
The word “bohemian” itself comes from the now Czech Republic and is a word used to describe the shared ideology for the people who desired freedom from the rules and stereotypes that prevailed at that time. What does Bohemia value most? Fearlessness and individuality. It’s important to carry these two words with you as you design your boho beach space.

Boho Beach Tip #2. Embrace the Eclectic
The bohemian appeal is all about procuring furniture and decor from your travels and adventures and piecing them together in an effortless and beautiful way. Mix floral fabrics with graphic prints, put Moroccan accessories on a modern coffee table. Include frayed edging, capiz shell, kilim pillows, and shag carpets… The key here is to ensure everything is worked into a consistent (but colorful!) palette and tone so the space doesn’t end up looking hodgepodge.

Boho Beach Tip #3. Use Natural Materials
Both the coastal and the boho style draw inspiration from the outdoors. Coastal draws from the beach and the sea, and bohemian from the land and wilderness. Make sure to use natural elements like wood, jute, and leather as you put together your boho beach style room. Want to learn more about natural materials? Read our guide here! And don’t forget, no boho space is complete without lots of greenery.

Boho Beach Tip #4. Community is Key
Designing a space that works well for entertaining and for intimate conversations with friends is very important to the Bohemian style. In a big open space, make sure there is plenty of seating available arranged closely enough to facilitate conversation easily. Even consider a lounge chair or daybed in the living room. It’s all about creating a welcoming atmosphere that makes your guests feel comfortable.

Boho Beach Tip #5. Sport a Colorful and Coastal Attitude
For a home that could be right out of Venice Beach, work some coastal elements subtly into the boho aesthetic. Think bright white walls (with colorful wall art or a tapestry), white washed furniture (with patterned blankets or fun, printed pillows graciously thrown on top), or a few wooden, nautical decor pieces. Don’t be afraid of color. The boho beach look was invented for the bold and daring.
