Natural Carpet Deodorizer from Scratch
Carpets are often forgotten when spring cleaning and they could definitely use some love! A great way to make them feel new is to freshen them up with a baking soda carpet deodorizer.
What I love the most about this little DIY is that you can make a large batch and keep it on hand at all times. It lasts for a long time stored in an airtight container.

What you need to make a DIY carpet deodorizer powder
Another great thing about this project is that you need very little supplies. Actually you only need 2.
That’s it. That’s all you need to make your own carpet freshener at home.

How to deodorize a carpet
Now that you have your DIY carpet deodorizer is time to put it to use! This is super simple:
- Sprinkle the natural baking soda deodorizer all over your carpet. A thin layer is more than enough.
- Let it sit for 1 hour to give the baking soda enough time to soak up all the odors that are lingering.
- Vacuum your carpet as usual. If your vacuum cleaner comes with a upholstery attachment pick that one over the normal. Upholstery attachments usually grab small particles better from fibers.
Vacuum not working as well as it used to? Here’s how to tune up and clean it regularly!
For an average home, use the carpet deodorizer powder as needed and during spring cleaning to freshen things up.
If you have a dog, you can use it more often to keep the carpets fresh — just be sure to use a pet-safe essential oil (or leave out the oils).
Is baking soda a good carpet deodorizer?
Before trying this recipe on my own carpet (that was in a great need of some TLC) I used to think that a natural, homemade carpet freshener solution was not going to be enough.
Well, let me tell you that baking soda is a total powerhouse when it comes to freshening up your floors.
Baking soda is a great odor absorber which means it will do it’s job at getting rid of any weird smell, whether that’s in your carpet or in a piece of furniture that you’re refinishing. (It’s also great for cleaning your dishwasher!)
Then with the addition of essential oils you are infusing your carpets with some fresh scents that will last for a while.
If you want the scent to last even longer (while helping clean the air), we suggest an essential oil diffuser.
