5 Desk Styling Tips for Every Work-from-Home Space | Kathy Kuo Blog – Home Lighting Ideas

We love what we do here at Kathy Kuo Home and The Kuotes! But just like everybody else, there are times when the days get long–especially when working from home. Fortunately, we know the perfect cure that brings happiness to the workplace: desks are the easiest spaces to decorate, and desk styling is actually so much fun!

There’s nothing quite like a cute desk and your favorite accessories to get yourself motivated, right? We’re excited to share our favorite desk styling tips. Enjoy!

#1. Set Aside Time to Clear the Clutter

The first rule for desk styling is to ensure it’s always clean and clear. We understand that life gets messy: you have piles of papers to deal with, you work through lunch and don’t get the chance to throw out the empty food containers…we’ve all been there.

You should see our desks here at the office! But instead of waiting until Friday to do your desktop cleaning, set aside just five minutes at the end of your day to file away old papers, throw out the trash,  and put loose objects back where they belong. Not only will your desk look significantly better, but you’ll arrive to work the next morning with a fresh and clean start.

#2. Find Stylish Storage Solutions

Desk storage is a necessity for a workspace to be functional, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be an eyesore. Start with a place to store larger items like books and office supplies, such as our bone inlay cabinets or open wood bookcases. Then use decorative boxes and trays to group together smaller items, like your pens, sticky notes, or paperweights.

Choose pieces with both style and function that cater to your creative instincts and stylish sensibilities.

 #3. Cover Your Cords

There’s nothing more unattractive on a desk than a tangle of knotted cords and wires. But in today’s world, it’s almost impossible to work without your computer cord, phone charger, headphones, etc.

But don’t worry! There are several, easy DIY solutions for exposed cords: Feed cords through a hole drilled near the back of your desk and mount a surge protector on the underside. Or, if you’re not into the idea of drilling holes in your furniture, use Velcro strips or zip ties to secure cords into an organized cluster. And if it’s an option, choose desks or media cabinets with cord management already in place.

#4. Use a Bulletin Board

As interior designers, we use boards all the time to pitch ideas to clients. But bulletin boards are also a great way to clean up papers on your desk that you don’t need at the moment but aren’t ready to file away. Instead of letting loose papers clutter your space, pin up all of your odds and ends, and add any small details that might inspire you, like photographs or business cards.

#5. Accessorize Like a Pro

Investing in desk accessories you love is like finishing off an outfit with a statement necklace or the perfect pair of earrings. Indulge your desktop cravings with gorgeous trays and decorative bowls and boxes to help you stay organized. Had your eye on some standout stationary for a while? Go ahead and splurge. Your workspace will love you for it.
