For fans of Vincent Van Gogh, a visit to the Theatre of Digital Art in Souk Madinat Jumeirah is one you most likely ticked off your list as soon as the digital art theatre opened its doors in October 2020. The Dutch artist works of art are on display alongside other celebrated artists such as Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky and others in the regular show but it’s about to get taken a step further.
An immersive show titled ‘Being Van Gogh’ is coming to the Theatre of Digital Art on May 20 where the artist’s digitally displayed artworks will be paired with a touching play about his short and tragic life.
So, what can you expect from ‘Being Van Gogh’?
The show will focus on the most productive period of the artist’s life which is when he moved to Arles in the South of France. His most recognizable works were made during this time – The Sunflowers, Café Terrace At Night, The Bedroom, Starry Night Over The Rhone and many others. It was also during this time where Van Gogh formed his unique style of painting.
Audience members will witness important aspects of Van Gogh’s life and work such as his relationships with his brother and family, his ambitions and disappointments, his poverty and more. There is no fiction involved as all this is based on the letters that Van Gogh penned himself to his brother, Theodorus (Theo) Van Gogh. It is said that he wrote more than 2,000 letters in total.
This free-hearted and intimate approach will enable visitors to understand the life and art of the great artist in the best way.
The performance will unfold in front of you as you are engulfed by Van Gogh’s outstanding artworks being displayed on the walls and ceilings with classical music. More than 300 images of Van Gogh’s paintings, sketches and documentary photos are used in the 45-minute immersive show.
