The global travel industry has experienced one of the most tumultuous years ever as a result of Covid-19, and now the CEO of Dubai Airports has confirmed that vaccine passports are ‘inevitable’ if there’s a hope of kickstarting international travel.
Paul Griffiths, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Airports, who is in support of the documents, said to the BBC, “I don’t think there is an alternative”. He added, “I think the problem is not the vaccine passport and its discrimination. It’s the need to roll things out and have a proper globally equitable vaccine programme.”
Currently UAE airlines Emirates and Etihad are trialling the IATA Travel Pass, a mobile app which will store your PCR and vaccine information, to ease travel during these times. The digital platform is designed to manage all travel documentation digitally, in line with any government requirements.
The app will allow passengers travelling abroad to share their Covid-19 test status directly with the airline before even reaching the airport, which will then auto-populate onto their check-in system, making for a seamless travel experience.
Emirates and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) recently began working together in order to implement a new system which will digitally update and verify Covid-19 medical records. The system will provide details on recent PCR results and vaccination records

There has been some debate on whether the vaccine passports are a good thing, with The World Health Organisation and World Travel & Tourism Council predicting they might create a “two-tier society whereby only certain groups are able to fully enjoy their rights”.
