Every year, the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) brings awareness to Baby Safety Month and shares expert info for parents in key safety categories. This year, two of the main focuses are on baby safety basics and playtime safety.

Baby Safety Basics
Baby-proofing your home is actually super-easy when you keep a few baby safety basics in mind! If you’re feeling overwhelmed, just take a big, deep breath and follow a few simple steps to designing an environment for your sweet baby that’s as safe as it is stylish!
- Buy Age-Appropriate Products & Read the Manual: Especially through your baby’s first year of life, using products specifically designed for their age and stage is essential to their safety and comfort, When you’re selecting a crib, bassinet, stroller, car seat, and high chair, double check the manufacturers’s intended age range.
- Always use products only as directed: If you’re going with any convertible products that grow with baby–we love a chic convertible crib–be sure to read all the instructions for safe conversion and age guidelines.
- Think Like a Baby: One of the best starting points when baby-proofing is to literally think like a baby! It may sound silly, but literally get down on the floor and crawl around. Are there sharp corners, wires or outlets within reach, or cabinets and drawers to be pulled open from your vantage on the floor? If you notice it, your baby is double-sure to notice it and be curious.
- Bring Care-Givers into the Conversation: We all know–it takes a village to raise a child! So make sure that your “village”–grandparents, nannies, sitters, and anyone who is likely to be in your home often and helping to care for your baby–is up to date on baby safety knowledge. Walk them through the nursery and explain the safety features of your furniture. Ditto for strollers and car seats. Finally, show any care-givers how to work your cabinet closures and other baby safety devices.
- Make a list of the possible hazards and invest in some easy safety aids like child locks and outlet covers.

Playtime Safety
So my kiddos aren’t babies anymore (sob!!!) but playtime is still my favorite part of being a mama! I love to just relax with my children and immerse myself in whatever activity they’re loving at the time (so that means a lot of Pokemon and soccer these days!). That said, when you have a baby, there are some safety factors that need to be considered. Read on for some top tips from the JPMA!
- Stay with Baby at All Times: Even if you’ve placed your baby in bouncer or swing and have strapped them in safely, you should never leave them unattended. This goes double for when baby is enjoying tummy time or is using a play gym on the floor.
- Do Your Research & Shop Smart: Just like with nursery and baby gear, it’s important to be a smart shopper when it comes to baby toys and items like bouncers, swings, and play mats. Make sure you only shop from baby brands with good reputations, and make sure you read all of the age restrictions and usage guidelines.
- Keep Everything Secure: If your little one is bopping around in a baby swing or bouncer, the most important factor is make sure that all safety harnesses and straps are being used properly. You’ll also want to make sure that you set these items up on flat, level surfaces so that there’s no chance of tipping.
